- <> Note that the Zip is an external unit and comes with a SCSI cable while the
- <> SyQuest for that price is an internal unit.
-
- Note that this is incorrect! I purchased an EXTERNAL SCSI
- SyQuest EZ135S complete with cable, power supply, case and
- one cartridge (plus 3 disks of OS2/Windoze software) for the
- stated price plus $7 shipping via Airborne Express.
-
- The INTERNAL IDE model goes for about $170.
-
- <> The Zip drive can be bought locally here, _at_dealers_, for $190.
-
- So. That does not offset the advantages of the SyQuest over
- the ZIP.
-
- <> In packs of three, the Zip disks are $17.
-
- I've seen SyQuest cartridges for $19.95 singly, but haven't
- looked for any deals on buying more than one at a time.
- Isn't an extra 33 Mbs of storage worth the extra $3 in
- cartridge costs? I think it is.
-
- <> In packs of ten, the Zip disks are $15. (Since there are lots of Amiga Zip
- <> owners in my user group, we can all chip in for a pack of ten and save
- <> more.)
-
- Nothing wrong with that.
-
- <> The Zip disks are nice and small and very rugged.
-
- Have you compared a ZIP disk's size to a SyQuest EZ135
- cartridge lately? The size difference is negligable.
-
- I'll agree that the platters used in the SyQuest's
- cartridges may be more fragile than the ZIP's disks. I'm
- neither careless nor abusive with my computer equipment,
- though.
-
- <> The SyQuest disks have bulky, clumsy cases and, well, you'll probably need
- <> that 5 year warranty.
-
- Unfounded. The cases are no more clumsy than a CD-ROM's case
- is. Pop it open -- pop it closed.
-
- <> Zip disks can be ejected with a simple push of a button and come out
- <> immediately. The SyQuest can't and doesn't.
-
- Yes, that extra speed does require spin up/down time.
- About 5 seconds for each. Are you in that big of a hurry to
- swap disks? :-) Geeze, we're not playing video games off of
- these things. How much swapping do you do with those ZIP
- disks?
-
- I agree that the SyQuest's way of ejecting
- is more awkward than the ZIP's way. I have to press a button
- and then manually slide a lever over to eject the cartridge.
-
- <> The Zip drive has a nifty window in the top that allows you to see the
- <> label of the disk in the drive.
-
- Not that big of a deal.
-
- <> Zip drives come in environmentally friendly packaging. :-)
-
- But I save all my computer boxes. :-)
-
-
- Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to start a ZIP vs SyQuest
- war, but after trying a ZIP drive for a day I decided to go
- for the SyQuest after reading its specs. I don't regret the
- choice.
